Détente (jan 1, 1967 – jan 1, 1979)
Description:
Description: The period of eased relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was characterized by increased cooperation between the two powers, most notable in arms control with the signing of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) treaties.
Significance: Although Detente did not end the cold war, it led to peaceful collaborations between the two rivals and agreed reductions in nuclear arm stockpiles, as well as the continuation of the US’s containment policy.
