Giuseppe Verdi (jan 1, 1813 – jan 1, 1901)
Description:
Nationality: Italian
By age 9, young Verdi was a church organist. Still quite early in his composition career in 1840, he nearly abandoned it when two of his children died in infancy, his wife died, and his most recent opera was doing poorly. In spite of this, his next opera (Nabucco) was a triumph and launched Verdi as a star composer with many years ahead of busy and successful opera composition. He and his lover soprano Giuseppina Strepponi settled on a farm in 1851, where they lived for the rest of their lives. In 1871, he retired from the stage and mostly lived off of royalties. His music well embodies Romantic drama and passion.
