Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (jan 1, 1805 – jan 1, 1847)

Description:

Nationality: German

Fanny Hensel had much the same musical, religious, and academic training as her brother Felix, but due to social and familial expectations for women of her wealth and class, she made a career as a wife and mother rather than as a musician. She confined her music-making almost entirely to the domestic sphere, and after marrying painter Wilhelm Hensel she led a salon where she played piano and presented her compositions. Her husband encouraged her to publish her music, but she died unexpectedly of a stroke less than a year after her first publication.
