First Great Awakening (jan 1, 1730 – jan 1, 1770)
Description:
The idea of spiritual and religious devotion was revived. The movement began in Europe however was popularized in the American colonies. The revival began as preachers altered their messages as well as reemphasizing the concepts of the popular 16th century faith, Calvinism. They began to express the importance of scripture, faith and predestination. The idea was that all people are sinners and must beg for forgiveness. Figures such as Jonathan Edwards aided the spread of the awakening. It was a religious turning point in the American colonies.
