Tet Offensive (jan 31, 1968 – sep 23, 1968)

Description:

The Tet Offensive starts when Viet Cong (National Liberation Front) guerrillas and troops from North Vietnam attack South Vietnam in January. "Tet" refers to the Vietnamese holiday for the lunar new year. This day would be established as a truce to the South Vietnamese and communist fighting. Instead, the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong attacked when the South's guard was down.

In Saigon, US Marines battled attacking guerrillas at the US Embassy.

In March of 1968, Lyndon B. Johnson halts the bombing of North Vietnam and instead offers peace talks. This is when the US enters the war officially.
