The Purges (dec 31, 1936 – jan 1, 1938)
Description:
The Soviet Union’s Secret police, OGPU, was renamed to the NKV. This was Stalin’s “instrument” for removing his enemies. Old heroes of the Revolution were charged with treason and executed for, “plotting to overthrow the government.” Stalin executed one out of five officers in the Army, which would later be a mistake that would haunt him when the war broke out.
