Korean War (jun 25, 1950 – jul 27, 1953)

Description:

The Korean War was a proxy war that began with a surprise attack by the North Korean Commuinist army invading South Korea and capturing Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The US, believing the Soviets were behind this attack, successfully lobbied the UN for support. The Korean War was fought between North Korea, aided by Communist China and South Korea, aided by the United Nations (mainly the US). With support of 20 countries, the US military fought the North Koreans back from the 38th Parallel and into the North Korean capital of Pyongyang. Eventually China helped the North Koreans push the US military and its allies back close to the 38th parallel. There was a ceasefire in July 1953, though no peace treaty was ever signed between the two countries. The significance of this war is that through a proxy war, it solidified the US position of containment and attempt to stop the spread of communism. The US government gave military assistance and economic aid to noncommunist governments in Asia. Lastly, President Eisenhower took the position of containment based on the domino effect, if one country fails to communism, it will lead to others falling too.
