- “european Style” colonies- some came for money (Chesapeake Region)
- some came to make a perfect society (New England Region)
- conflict over land with Natives / conflict over control with French
- slowly developing “American culture” (still mostly just copying British culture)
- SALUTARY NEGLECT (avoiding strict enforcement of the law/ laissez-faire style
