Description:

Iwo Jima was the island that would allow the US to escort bomber planes into Japan, and recognizing this, the US launched a series of attacks while Japan attempted to build up its defenses, the fierce fighting eventually ending in a US win, killing all but 1,000 of the Japanese defenders. Significant figures include Ira Hayes and Harold Schultz, two of the soldiers who fought on the American side and participated in the fought raising of the flag on the American side of the island.
