Guadalcanal Campaign (aug 7, 1942 – feb 21, 1943)

Description:

Following Japanese attempts to cut off the connection between Australia and North America, American forces seized the island of Guadalcanal and engaged in fierce combat by sea, air, and land with the Japanese; Eventually due to disease, starvation, and heavy losses, the Japanese ceded control of the island to the US. Significant figures during this event include Major General Alexander Vandegrift, who led the initial landing on Guadalcanal, and Rear Admiral Tanaka Raizo, whose squadron would be renamed the "Tokyo Express" for its ferrying of tens of thousands of Japanese troops and supplies.
