Pemberton and his confederate men of 33,000 were set up in the defensive of vicksburg while they were being sieged for 47 days from Ulysses S. Grant and his Union army of 77,000. After a constant attack on the Confederates for 47 days, They surrendered and the Union gained victory. Soon after the union controlled almost all of the mississippi and split the split the Confederacy in half. The total casualties from the battle ended in 37,273 for both union and confederate
