Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793
Machine removes cotton seed from cotton very quickly and cheaply.
Cleaning cotton by hand was very difficult. A worker could clean just 1 pound a day
The cotton gin could clean up to 50 pounds of cotton a day!
Southern life changed in important ways:Increased cotton production
Increased demand for slave labor
Sectional disputes between free and slave states increased as slavery spread
Cotton became King in the South!
