Description:
Antietam, the deadliest one-day battle in American military history. It gave President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation at a moment of strength rather than desperation. The battle contained 12,401 Union forces lead by Maj. General George B. McClellan defending the point of Antietam, while General Robert E. Lee and stonewall Jackson pushed thier confederate army of 10,316 into Maryland. He wanted to move the fighting away from the South and into Federal territory to capture them in Washington. If victory was in the Unions favor then Abraham could keep control of congress and issue emancipation Proclamation as the fighting for this war. It ended in union Victory and a total estimated casualty count of 22,717.
