The Space Race (oct 4, 1957 – jul 17, 1975)

Description:

The Space Race was a tense competition between the United States and the USSR (Soviet Union) that lasted for 18 years. As it occurred during the Cold War, both nations sought to outdo one another in the pursuit of reaching space and the moon. Stable nuclear deterrence pulled the US into the Space race. Because the Soviets had the successful Sputnik I, the US had to have something of similar power in order for MAD (mutually assured destruction) to be applied. By joining the Space Race, the US quickly developed satellites to the equivalent capability of the Soviets', which prevented another war. This assured that both sides would equally be affected and destroyed if both were to engage in nuclear warfare.
