Defeat of the Roman Republicans (nov 15, 1848 – jul 3, 1849)
Description:
On Nov 15, 1848, Count Pelligrino Rossi is assassinated. This was done in the hopes the Pope (a new nationalist icon after the defeat of Charles Albert) would appoint a new, radical ministry.
The Pope fled to Naples
By February, a new Roman Republic is declared, with nationalists like Garibaldi and Mazzini flocking to Rome.
By the end of March, 10,000 French soldiers stormed Rome. Garibaldi tried to lead rebellion against Austria which ultimately failed. By July 3, Rome had fallen to French forces.
This defeat crippled the Italian unification movement
