In the history of the United Kingdom, the Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign. The period saw the British Empire grow to become the first global industrial power, producing much of the world's coal, iron, steel and textiles. It was the time of the world's first Industrial Revolution, political reform and social change, Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin, a railway boom and the first telephone and telegraph. By this time the role of the monarch was to reign, rather than rule.
