President Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) Common Man's President (jan 1, 1829 – jan 1, 1837)

Description:

Spoils System:
A system where Andrew Jackson replaced all government supporters with his own patrons. People thought this practice was dishonest and corrupt, quite ironic after Jackson pledged "Corrupt Bargaining" when Quincy-Adams appointed Henry Clay in 1824.

Nullification Crisis:
South Carolina's ordinance of nullification made it possible for them to nullify tariffs imposed by the federal government. They also threatened to secede after years of economic pain. Jackson threatened to send troops their way, and Henry Clay compromised to reducing the tariffs gradually over the years, making both parties somewhat happy.
