Description:
After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia desperately needed organization. Boris Yeltsin became Russia's new leader, tasked with rebuilding the country's shattered economy and reunifying the people. By 1997, unemployment had dropped below 20 percent.
Russia's fragile stability was threatened throughout the 1990s by separatists and ethnic conflicts. Many territories wanted to break away from Russian rule. Conflicts drained Russia's resources and created more hardships for the people.
