Chosôn (the land of the morning calm) was first mentioned when Han Wudi (Chinese emperor) attacked and conquered the „state“ (more of a tribal federation)
inhabitants: said to be illiterate
--> northwestern part of Chosôn: directly incorporated into the Chinese empire for the next 4 centuries. (The first and only time of direct Chinese rule in Korea)
--> separation into 4 commanderies (Lelang, Xuantu, Lintun and Zhenfan)
