James VI and I (jun 19, 1566 – mar 27, 1625)
Description:
James VI and I was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death in 1625.
After Elizabeth I died, her son James VI of Scotland now becomes James I of England too.
Union of the Crowns 1603 > This was the start of England, Scotland and Ireland becoming Britain.
Later followed the Act of Union, which created the Kingdom of Great Britain.
King James I wanted England to have its own version of the bible, and therefore he authorised a new translation of the bible for general use, since there wasn’t one bible at that time.
In 1603 he travelled from Edinburgh to London
He was presented with ‘’millenary petition’ by 150 reformers who requested a new translation
The king proposed a panel of students to translate and he asked Bishops to revise these
54 translations were divided into 6 ‘companies’, each working on a different section
This process took almost 8 years, it was completed in 1611
This Project was successful because:
Intellectual quality and personal enthusiasm of the panel members
They listened to final drafts
Panel was consciously conservative and frequently introduced to archaism and traditional readings.
The printing press also influenced this, because it now could be spread through the entire country.
