Description:

Context: first used by John O' Sullivan in favor of the U.S. annexing Texas

Cause:
1. response to U.S. annexation of Texas
2. dispute with Britain over the Oregon Country which became part of the union.

Effect:
1. Drove 19th century U.S. territorial expansion
- justify the forced removal of Native Americans and other groups from their homes
2. intensified issue of slavery
- new states were added to the Union, leading to the outbreak of the Civil War
