Acropolis = high city, location of some of the most important buildings and temples of the city.
This is the most famous because Athens was the most powerful city-state at this time.
Parthenon - marble temple to the goddess Athena
High Classical Moment - inspired later achievements against the perfection of the Parthenon.
arthenon is a doric temple referring to it’s columns.
West Pediment of Parthenon shows Athena battling Poseidon. They are vying for the honor to be the patron of the city. Poseidon strikes a rock and salt water from the sea emerges (gift of naval superiority) Athena offers an olive tree (land of prosperity) Modern greeks have re-planted a tree to represent Athena’s offering.
