He took over the country after the Norman conquest. He brought nobles (land owners) and divided the land among them, which is how he imposed the feudal system (land in exchange for service). Influence on the English language – Latin, Old English (Celtic – Germanic), French spoken by nobility (sheep – mutton..). A feudal society has three distinct social classes: a king, a noble class (which could include nobles, priests, and princes) and a peasant class. The Norman invasion of England in 1066 had a major impact not only on the country, but also on the English language. William the Conqueror and his merry band of Normans brought with them Norman French, which became the language of the court, government and the upper class for the next three centuries.
