Cause:- Thomas Jefferson withheld William Marbury a judgeship commission that was formalized but never delivered before Jefferson's inauguration
Effect:
- Supreme Court struck down act of Congress as unconstitutional
- decision created doctrine of judicial review
- set up Supreme Court of U.S. as chief interpreter of Constitution
