Spanish American War (12h 53min, apr 24, 1898 y – 20h 5min, jul 17, 1898 y)

Description:

The Spanish American War lasted from April 24, 1898 to July 17 of the same year. It was a conflict between Spain and America over the freedom of Cuba. Tensions were increased by the yellow journalism in the media and the “attack on the US Maine (later, it was discovered the ship was not blown up by Spain and rather had a mechanical malfunction). It resulted in the US gaining territories in the Pacific (Guam, Cuba, Philippines and Puerto Rico) and Spain’s loss of colonial rule in the Americas. Santiago surrendered to General Shafter on July 17, but the Treaty of Paris was not signed until December 10 of that year.
