John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry (oct 16, 1859 – oct 18, 1859)
Description:
An abolitionist named John Brown led an armed assault including around 20 men both white and black. The target of the assault was an arsenal of weapons in which Brown intended to take and arm slaves of the South to rise up against their masters. The raid failed and John Brown was hanged. For Southerners the raid demonstrated the seriousness of the abolitionist cause and a legitimate threat to the institution of slavery.
