As guerrilla groups begin attacking National Guardsmen in Northern Morazán, the Guardsmen respond by killing peasants they suspect are sympathetic to communism. Peasants in Morazán begin to flee to Honduras or join the guerrillas in the form of "masas", or, civilian supporters. At this point, the divide between peasant and guerrilla begins to blur.
