Aleppo and Damascus (jan 1, 1075 – jan 1, 1870)
Description:
There was a gaonate based in Damascus in the 1100s and 1200s, and the community was very influential, played a major role in disputes between Egypt and Babylon.
Destroyed along with the general population of Damascus and Aleppo by Tamerlane, but fairly quickly recovered.
Many refugees arrived from Sepharad, and more from the Land of Israel in the 1600s during the crises there. The community remained a center throughout the 1600s and 1700s.
Declined as a center of Torah learning by the mid-1800s although the community remains influential and significant today.
