Spanish American War (apr 1, 1898 – aug 1, 1898)

Description:

The Spanish-American War was a conflict between the United States and Spain. The war originated in the Cuban struggle for their independence from Spain which resulted in a rebellion. Spain’s cruelly repressive actions to stop the rebellion were graphically depicted in the United States yellow journalism which enraged many Americans. President William McKinley was very hesitant on entering the war until the USS Maine was supposedly bombed by the Spaniards. After that he had no choice but to intervene. Eventually, the war ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and resulted in US acquisition of territories in the western Pacific and Latin America: Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Cuba gained their independence, however the US stationed soldiers in the country for years, along with commonly intervening in the nation’s politics.
