2. These debates were a series of seven debates and propelled Lincoln's political career into the national spotlight while at the same time stifling Douglas' career.
3. The results of the debates led to Lincoln becoming acknowledged as a strong national figure whilst weaking Douglas' support in his own party. This led to Lincoln gaining a good ground of support for the upcoming election which would be bad for the South
