Battle of Liège (aug 5, 1914 – aug 16, 1914)
Description:
The Battle of Liège was the first land battle of World War One. Germany enacted its ‘Schlieffen Plan’ and Germany’s General Emmich’s army of 30,000 men attacked Liège, which was defended by twelve heavily armed forts. Though confident, the German army suffered heavy losses and made little progress. After this, they used 17-inch howitzers to attempt to overtake the forts, succeeding on August 16, ensuring their occupation of Belgium.
