Kairouan (jan 1, 900 – jan 1, 1057)
Description:
The city of Kairouan in Tunisia was a major center of Jewish learning during the time period.
In 1015, Abraham ben Nathan, leader of this community, was named the "prince of the diaspora" by the Geonim of Babylonia.
An expulsion in 1057 brought an end to this physical center, but the scholarship remains influential today.
Rabenu Chananel wrote in Kairouan.
