Women’s March on Versailles (oct 5, 1789 – oct 5, 1789)
Description:
On October 5, 1789, thousands of Parisian women marched toward Versailles to confront the king and the National Assembly. Louis XVI promised them grain supplies for Paris, thinking that this would end the protest, but the women’s action forced the Paris National Guard to follow their lead and march to Versailles. The crowd demanded that the royal family return to Paris, and on October 6, the king complied. The king virtually became a prisoner in Paris.
