Description:

After an ambush near Valognes on the Cotentin Peninsula fails, the rebel nobles—Guy of Burgundy/Brionne, Nigel of the Cotentin, Rannulf of the Bessin, Ralph Tesson of Thury, Grimoald of Plessis, and Hamon Dentatus (Haimo of Creully)—raised an army of about 25,000 men. The King of France, agreeing to, help William, had raised his own army and rode to William's aid in the early part of 1047. William raised his own soldiers in eastern Normandy.
The rebels marched east, crossing the River Orne at various points, and congregated about nine miles south-east of the town of Caen: Val-es-Dunes.
