Southern Recounstruction (jan 1, 1865 – jan 1, 1877)

Description:

After the civil war the north tried to solidify the country once more by helping the south reconstruct. The north help build schools, and protected the right to vote for black southerners. This led to an increase of black representation in the government of the south and better laws being passed to protect black americans. As a direct response many southern states set up black codes, which enforced the racist social structure of old.
