The Spanish American War (apr 25, 1898 – aug 12, 1898)

Description:

The Spanish American war was a war fought against Spain mainly over the independence of Cuba. Most of the battles were fought either on American or Spanish soil but on Spain's territories, Cuba and The Philippines. The Cubans were fighting for their independence long before the U.S. intervened, many Americans supported Cuba’s cause but not enough so to declare war on Spain. It wasn’t until the exploding of the U.S. ship the Maine in Havana, Cuba that most Americans wanted to go to war, blaming Spain for the incident. AT first President McKinley resisted going to war but later succumbed to the public pressure and delayered war on April 25, 1898 on Spain. America first attacked The Philippines at the battle of Manila Bay gaining its control. The rough riders, led by Theodore Roosevelt, were sent to Cuba to fight and were made of of mainly cowboys. The war ended with the surrender of Spain and the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The United States gained the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico because of this war.
