Art Nouveau (jan 1, 1890 – jan 1, 1920)

Description:

Art Nouveau Graphic Design Style: 1890-1920

Art Nouveau Graphic Design Style:
Art Nouveau is considered to be the first "modern" style. It was the first time that design was promoted through mass communication. It was the first self-conscious attempt by western culture to create something new, although it was basically the baby of the Arts & Crafts movement, which was inspired by the Gothic era. One could say Art Nouveau was an emotional style. It found world-wide appeal at the turn of the century with an idea that one could have an erotic wardrobe. Compared to the twenty-first century the style was full of emotion which is something we've strayed away from.

Practitioners of the movement:
Art Nouveau flourished because of a growing economy for the first 15 years of the 20th century.

Famous People:
Jules Cheret (1836-1932)
Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939

Technology of the Time Period:

The turn of the century was an age of innovation, introducing modern conveniences such as the car and the telephone, electricity, the department store, and the skyscraper. Cities where blooming, nationalism was on the rise, and the role of women was shifting. Art Nouveau reflected these transformations in an exuberant style that emphasised nature and the beauty of optimism. The distinguishing ornamental characteristics of Art Nouveau is its undulating asymmetrical line, often taking the form of a flower bud and or stalks. The way they produced some of their work in this time period was lithography. Lithography is the Greek word for “Writing with stone”, it's a very popular form of surface printing, a technique based on the immiscibility of oil and water. Lithography quickly became popular with artists as a means of reproduction. The artist simply drew a picture on a stone, which was then pressed to reproduce lots of copies on paper.
