Jefferson Presidency (mar 4, 1801 – mar 4, 1809)

Description:

The election of 1800 was a hard fought one, between Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic- Republican, and John Adams, a leader of the Federalist Party. They fought long and hard for the election, but in the end, Jefferson won the electoral vote with some persuading from Alexander Hamilton. Through this process they found some flaws in the electoral college and thus passed the 12th amendment, which we still use today. As president, Jefferson believed that a simple government was the best for the people so that they could control the government. He tried to decentralize government and cut costs wherever possible so that the people had as much of a voice as possible. His philosophies were later named Jeffersonian Republicanism.
