Attack on Fort Sumter (apr 12, 1861 – apr 14, 1861)

Description:

The Confederates demanded Anderson surrender Fort Sumter and when he refused, the next day, the Confederates open fired at Fort Sumter for 36 consecutive hours. This marked the start of the American Civil War! For the first 2 hours Anderson and his men did not return fire as they were very short on supplies and ammunition. Capitan doubleday was the first person on the Union side to fire shots back at the Confederates. One the 13th of April, Anderson surrendered ending the attack with zero casualties. When retreating, however, there was a 100 gun salute were one of the guns accidentally exploded killing one soldier.
