Emancipation Proclamation (sep 22, 1862 – jan 1, 1863)

Description:

The Emancipation Proclamation was created during the time Lincoln was president. It meant that all slaves living in the South would be free after January 1, 1863. But it didn't free slaves living in the Union. The freed slaves could join the northern army. This changed the focus of the war, from the beginning it was about preserving the Union but now it was also a question of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation was the thing that later lead to the abolition of slavery.
