Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century. He was born on the island of Corsica and he rapidly rose through the military ranks during the French Revolution. Napoleon played a key role in the French Revolution (1789–99), served as first consul of France (1799–1804), and was the first emperor of France (1804–14/15). Today Napoleon is widely considered one of the greatest military generals in history. In 1799, he seized political power in France and was crowned emperor in 1804.Added to timeline:
