Emmeline Pankhurst formed the Women’s Social Political Union (WSPU) in 1903, frustrated with the peaceful National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) led by Millicent Garrett Fawcett. She wanted to employ militant tactics while the NUWSS wrote letters to Parliament and joined committees, to no avail.Added to timeline:
