AWSA is founded (nov 1, 1869 – nov 1, 1869)
The AWSA was founded from the remains of the AERA by Lucy Stone, Henry B. Blackwell, and Julia Ward Howe after the NWSA split from the AERA. Unlike their solely female counterpart, the AWSA “encouraged male officers, supported the Republican Party, sought simple enfranchisement, and counted the abolitionists among its ranks.” They also focused on obtaining suffrage on state and local levels, and encouraged supporting state societies to be formed to spread information about the movement. However, they were more conservative with their actions, and this might have gained them more respect (or less annoyance at least) from the male population.
