Slavery: Work, Spiritual and Gospel songs (jan 1, 1619 – jan 1, 1800)

After the founding of the United States in 1776, some of the new nation's first protest songs were by and about slaves. These songs were rooted in religious hymns and spirituals with biblical themes. At this time, slaves were black, and they were persecuted by white and rich people. In general, slaves were religious, so they sang spiritual or gospel song. Work songs, spiritual and gospel songs appeared in 1619 at the begining of slavery. Sing was encouraged, and drums were outlawed. Slaves were able to marry each other, only if their master were agree. Their life depended to their slavesowner.
