Sherman's March to the Sea (nov 15, 1863 – dec 21, 1863)
Description:
Any remaining Southern hope was crushed during Sherman's March to the Sea. A prime example of total war (which would be used again, most notably in WWII), the March was devastating. After the fall of Atlanta, General Sherman marched his troops through Georgia, destroying everything they came upon. In addition to fulfilling its goal of ruining Southern moral, it also gave the South a lot of rebuilding to do, which probably encouraged General Lee to move quickly into negotiations and start the process of reconstruction.
