Articles of Confederation (mar 1, 1781 – jun 21, 1788)
Description:
The Articles of Confederation were the first constitution of the United States. Written directly after the Revolutionary War ended and the colonists gained their independence, the Articles focused on limiting the power of the federal government. Debates over land was the big thing that stood in the way of ratification until March 1, 1781, when Maryland became the last state to ratify the Articles. As time passed, it became clear that the Articles of Confederation weren't going to work over the long term; however, any amendments needed all thirteen states to agree. Our current Constitution was ratified on June 21, 1788.
