The earliest animations on film 1900 to 1910 considered animation on film (jan 1, 1900 – dec 31, 1909)

Description:

The story of animation precedes that of cinema and silent film by at least half a century, however there are claims that moving images of death removing his head have been animated by the use of the so-called Magic Lantern in 1659. The Magic Lantern was invented by Christiaan Huygens at that time and was potentially the first animations being projected. Animation prior to this time where simple and required the use of shadow puppets or painted sequence of images as can be found in burial chamber murals found in Egypt. Animation quickly adopted new inventions and gizmos to facilitate the animation of images and the 1800s saw these curiosities in fairs.

The earliest animation on film can be traced to Théâtre Optique where from 28 October 1892 to March 1900 Reynaud gave over 12,800 shows to a total of over 500,000 visitors at the Musée Grévin in Paris, the Pantomimes Lumineuses series of animated films each contained 300 to 700 frames manipulated back and forth to last 10 to 15 minutes per film with the background projected separately.
It took the animated film named “The Enchanted Drawing” to claim the title of the animation industry as it can be regarded as the first theatrical film recorded on standard film, created by J. Stuart Blackton a British-American filmmaker and co-founder of Vitagraph Studios. The animation included the character face changing expression and other trick animation replacing drawn items becoming real and back again. Blackton's film “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” in 1906 is often regarded as the oldest known drawn animation on standard film, it used blackboard stop motion animation and two sequences using cut-out animation. His “The Haunted Hotel” in 1907 was considered very influential in the field of animation.

Finally, in 1908 it was a stick figure animation in the film “Fantasmagorie” by the French artist Émile Cohl that claimed the title what we know as traditional animation method.

On a side note there is a claim of the earliest Anime produced around 1910 a three second named Katsudō Shashin.
