Battle of Leyte Gulf (oct 23, 1944 – oct 26, 1944)
Description:
- Genera; MacArthur commanded the battle and as he arrived on shore he announced "People of the Philippines: I have returned."
- The battle took place on the Leyte Gulf which was a gulf in the Eastern Philippines
- The Allies arrived with 178,000 troops and 738 ships. The Japanese put all they could into the battle and also tested a new strategy of the Kamikaze which served as a suicide-plane which would crash into Allied ships
- 424 Kamikaze pilots served in the battle sinking 16 ships and damaging 80 more
- The battle was a dramatic loss for Japan, the battle reduced the role the Imperial Navy played in the defense of Japan heavily as it lost 3 battleships, 4 aircraft carriers, 13 cruisers, and nearly 500 planes
