Description:

Daniel Dennett was born in Boston, MA in 1942. He is an Author, Philosopher, and a Professor at Tufts University. Dennett earned his degree for a Bachelors of Arts in philosophy from the Harvard University in 1963. After his graduation, Daniel was admitted to the University of Oxford in England. Oxford gave Dennett a chance to excel under the guidance of British Philosopher Gilbert Ryle, Ryle is most notable for his critique of Cartesian dualism. In 1965, Dennett had received his Ph.D. in Philosophy which he used as a teacher at the University of California Irvine. This would be around the time that Daniel would become one of the co-directors for the Centre of Cognitive Studies, along with the Austin B. Fletcher a Professor of Philosophy.
Dennett’s most distinguished works were introduced in the 1970’s with his first publication “Brainstorms: Philosophical Essays on Mind and Psychology”, the book was based on the theories of artificial intelligence and consciousness. Following, ‘The Mind’s I: Fantasies and Reflection on Self and Soul’, the next book was based on free will and determinism, entitled ‘Elbow Room: The Varieties of Free Will Worth Wanting’, in 1991 ‘Consciousness Explained’, and the Pulitzer prize winner “Darwin’s Dangerous Idea” in 1995.
Daniel Dennett is perhaps most known for his thoughts of the materialist philosophy of mind. His ‘Multiple Drafts’ theory explains how our consciousness works in a similar manner as a computer program. Dennett has said, “Consciousness just is the working of the various physical subsystems of the brain, but it is “smeared out” over those subsystems; there is no center of human conscious experience.”
