Battle of Stalingrad (aug 23, 1942 – feb 2, 1943)

Description:

Location: Stalingrad (now known as Volgograd), Russia
Summary: In the summer of 1942, the Germans took the offensive in the southern Soviet Union. The German air force then attacked the city with nightly bombing raids. The situation became desperate and for weeks the Germans pressed on in Stalingrad. As another winter set in the Soviets saw an opportunity to trap the Germans in and around the city. After that, the Germans' situation was hopeless but Hitler ordered them to keep fighting. The German commander surrendered on January 31, 1943, with the surrender of the army shortly following.
Significance: This was significant because it was a huge win for the Allies but it did come at a cost of over 1 million Soviet soldier deaths. This battle was one of the first major German losses during the war and it also marked the end of Germany's advances into eastorn Europe and Russia.
